Kaiserin Elisabeth von Österreich-Ungarn, die Heine verehrte und die erste Düsseldorfer Denkmalsinitiative unterstützt hatte, beabsichtigte, der Hansestadt eine Statue des sitzenden Heine zu schenken. Auf deren Gipsmodell, einen Entwurf des dänischen Bildhauers Louis Hasselriis, der später auch Heines Grabbüste anfertigen sollte, war sie bereits 1873 auf der Weltausstellung in Wien aufmerksam geworden. Hamburg lehnte das Geschenk jedoch ab. Daher beauftragte die Kaiserin Hasselriis 1890 privat mit der Ausführung seines Modells in Marmor.[77] Das im September 1891 vollendete Denkmal wurde im Park ihres Schlosses Achilleion auf der Insel Korfu aufgestellt. Nach dem Tod Elisabeths 1898 verkauften ihre Erben das Achilleion dem deutschen Kaiser. Wilhelm II., der Heine als „Schmutzfinken im deutschen Dichterwald“ bezeichnete, ließ die Marmorskulptur 1909 entfernen und dem Hamburger Verleger Heinrich Julius Campe übergeben, dem Sohn Julius Campes. Dieser bot sie ein zweites Mal dem Hamburger Senat an, der das Geschenk aber erneut und mit dem Hinweis auf Heines angeblich „vaterlandsfeindliche Haltung“ ablehnte. Auch in diesem Fall hatte es wieder eine öffentliche Debatte gegeben, an der sich Adolf Bartels mit antisemitischer Polemik beteiligte. Das Denkmal wurde schließlich auf dem Privatgelände des Hoffmann und Campe Verlags an der Mönckebergstraße errichtet und erst 1927 in Altona öffentlich aufgestellt. Um es vor der Zerstörung durch die Nationalsozialisten zu schützen, ließ die Tochter Campes es 1934 abbauen und 1939 zu ihrem Wohnort, der südfranzösischen Hafenstadt Toulon, verschiffen. Während der deutschen Besatzung Frankreichs versteckt, fand das weitgereiste Denkmal 1956 seinen endgültigen Platz im botanischen Garten Toulons. Vor wenigen Jahren scheiterte eine Initiative des Schauspielers Christian Quadflieg, die Skulptur nach Hamburg zurückzubringen. ---- RARE ---. Price : EUR 40,- |
